On our plates this week is the 2008 Cadillac CTS. This sporty sedan is a top pick for drivers who seek the luxury look and feel, but really crave subtle classiness. Cadillac can deliver: some consider it among the suavest makes in the world. Heck, even the word “Cadillac” rolls off the tongue like a smooth combination punch.

The 2008 Cadillac CTS has what it takes to make the road whimper. The engine is a 3.6 liter V6 that can put out 304 horsepower. A downgrade engine is available that still stays in the high 200s. Inside, the CTS has great new upholstery and tons of dashboard bells and whistles that’ll…

The 2008 Aston Martin DBS really does speak for itself. It’s hard to think of anything to say that would pay due respect to this princely ride. We didn’t want to cloud it over with kitsch, but here we go anyway: This car is so exceedingly fly that it makes all those “normal” cars look about as grown-up as  tricycles.

The 2008 Aston Martin DBS sits low and wide to deliver a sumptuous road-gobbling driving experience. It’s got a 6.0 liter V-12 engine that puts out 510 horsepower, and it can do the 0 to 60 in 4.3 seconds and max out over 190 miles per hour. If you’re actually rich…

We’ve been anxious to get a look at the 2009 Nissan Maxima because of its design overhaul. Fans of the Maxima can count on lots of clout in the aesthetic subtleties department.

The 2009 Maxima is a little shorter than previous models, but also a little wider; consequently, the sporty beast looks more than ever like it’s crouched and ready to go. Taking a gander under the hood, we’re impressed with the 3.5 liter V-6 engine that puts out 290 horsepower. The Maxima will get 19 miles to the gallon in town and 26 on the freeway, which certainly isn’t on the conservative side – but nothing about this car is conservative.

Get a look at the 2008 Jeep Compass if you’re a fan of the brand, just to see how things have changed over the years. Hardly an iota of the familiar Jeep styling is present in the Compass, but it retains some of the brand attitude and reportedly handle itself quite well when it’s rolling over real terrain.

The 2008 Jeep Compass has a continuously variable transmission to ensure a prudent use of fuel. A 2.0 liter four cylinder engine can get 158 horsepower, and an option to make the engine slightly bigger (2.4 liters) will squeeze out an extra 16 horses. The Compass should get at least 21 mpg in town…

We’re taking a look at the 2008 Mercury Mariner, one of the more sensible SUVs of the year. The Mariner isn’t the top of its class, nor does it have all of the best features, but it’s a solid ride all around; can pack in a lot of friends, family, and food; doesn’t do too badly on the gas; and will still make you feel mighty on the road.

Under the hood, the 2008 Mercury Mariner is using a 2.3 liter four-cylinder engine that can be replaced by a 3 liter V-6 upgrade. The four cylinder will get 153 horses, while the V-6 will push that to 200. Either option offers plenty…

We’ve taken our time getting around to the 2008 Saab 9-3, but we’re glad we get a chance to look at it. This car is a thoughtful, sporty roadster in a package that looks better or worse depending on what mood we’re in. The large, wide front and prominent grille sometimes strike us as clumsy and overbearing, but on the road those elements make a forceful impression.

Under the hood, the 2008 Saab 9-3 is pushing a turbocharged 2.0 liter inline four cylinder engine that’ll get around 210 horses. That’s pretty impressive. A high-performance option will upgrade the engine to a V-6 and increase the horsepower to 255. Expect to pay…

If you haven’t already, do yourself a favor and get a look at the 2008 Porsche 911 Carrera. This sportsmobile is so fast that you’ll probably never get a chance to see what it can really do. The steering is excellent and can handle as good or better than any other car we can think of. The 911 Carrera comes in a ton of different packages for maximum control over features and appearance.

Inside, the 2008 Porsche 911 Carrera shows off a 3.6 liter rear-mounted six cylinder beast of an engine that puts out a whopping 325 horsepower. The rig can do the 0 to 60 in a blazing fast five seconds…

We’re taking a look at the 2008 Chevy Malibu. In sync with its most vocal critics, we agree that the Malibu has a tired, unimpressive design package and a form factor that wasn’t even cutting-edge fifteen years ago. However, we’re not completely turned off by this car. We really like its powerful drive and relatively good fuel efficiency. This would actually be a good choice for someone who appreciates a more subtle, more historical looking vehicle.

Under the hood, we see a 3.5 liter V-6 engine pushing 216 horses, which is a considerable amount of power for a car of this class. The ride is quiet and smooth, and although the…

The Fiat 500 is a series of wagons intended to compete heavily with designs from MINI. Fiat is getting ready to put out a crossover CUV model in the 500 series that should have fans of the brand popping some corks. The new 500 is a redesigned version of the familiar wagon that adds a 4X4 drive feature.

The current 500 series drive system uses the platform on which the Panda 4X4 is currently built, so other drive features may continue to borrow from the Panda’s blueprint. We think that the crossover genre is really getting set to explode in popularity, and the new Fiat 500 will definitely be a fan favorite…

We’re taking a glance at the 2008 Saturn Astra, and we can tell why its fans like it so much, and why critics have been particularly generous to it over the last year. This is an excellent, affordably-priced car that’ll be great as a starter ride, or ideal for someone who needs to make lots of short to medium-distanced jaunts. The Astra is a compact car with great handling and steering that’ll put the Fahrvergnügen back into your life (sorry, Volkswagen).

Inside, the 2008 Saturn Astra is running a 1.8 liter four cylinder that will get 138 horsepower. There’s a manual option or a four-speed automatic that’s a little disappointing but still…

For wary drivers looking to make the jump to a hybrid, but want a sturdy, reliable, and tested driving package, look into the 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid. This excellent sedan is the familiar four-door design but really loads up on the fuel economy and has a lot of room all around for a comfortable, affordable drive. This is a great car for people who do a lot of commuting or a lot of traveling.

Inside, the 2008 Honda Civic has a 1.3 liter four cylinder engine paired with an IMA hybrid unit. The electric motor is 20 HP strong and can be configured to run the Civic all by itself. The…
