At the recently held Frankfurt Motor Show, Volkswagen has finally revealed the much awaited Golf R. The Golf R is a successor to the R32 variant of the previous-generation Golf. The new Golf R is now powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder, and promises to be as good as or even better than the R32.
The new car now has a lighter 2.0-liter turbocharged unit delivering 270 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Sending power to all four wheels, the Golf R accelerates from 0-60 in 5.7 seconds when equipped with a manual transmission, with Volkswagen’s optional DSG gearbox dropping that time to 5.5 seconds.
According to Volkswagen even with such sporty features the Golf R will be able to do a respectable 27.6mpg in the European cycle.
Highlights include LED lights, a new wheel design, R badging, twin exhaust, and a more aggressive body kit. Most of the technology of the Golf R is bases on the Scirocco R, which is not offered in the US. Luckily, the Golf R is headed for North American dealerships.
